More Whedonesque Identity Crises

You scored as Hoban 'Wash' Washburne. The Pilot. You are a leaf on the wind, see how you soar. You have a good job, and a stunning wife who loves you (and can kill people). Life is good, which is why you can’t help smiling. Now if you can just get people to actually listen to your opinion things would be perfect.

Which Serenity character are you?

Slightly disappointed to be Wash, but I have to admit that it fits. Especially the wife part.

I was very disappointed with the eviction of Keshia from NZ Idol last night. I don’t vote ONE WEEK and look what happens. I can’t even blame it on the Australian public like I usually do.

Actually I have a theory, votes were way down cos everyone got their Telecom bills this week, and were shocked by all those 99c calls – that’s what happened to me anyway.

Jesse better not win or I’m giving up on reality tv for good!

Speaking of reality tv, I’m very glad there’s only two weeks of Big Brother to go. Now I know who wins, it all seems like a pointless waste of 5 hours a week. But Jan has not yet suffered the disappointment of the outcome as she is spoiler free. If only she knew, she too would shun the remaining time! Alas cruel fate!

Lesbians Reunite!

Unlikely Lesbians

Good news, Maia and Jay are back together on Shortland Street. Seems that now Jay has discovered her one night stand with Norman did NOT result in a child (score one for realism), she regrets it all immensely.

Jay agrees not to rush off and do stupid things “if you agree to tell me what’s going on in that beautiful head of yours”.

Triple yay:

a) they are back together

b) despite gloomy predictions neither is now straight or celibate

c) no boring lesbian baby storyline – yawn – can’t lesbians do ANYTHING ELSE EXCEPT REPRODUCE!!

Shortland St Update

// June 1st, 2005 // 99 Comments » // Lesbian, Moviesandtv, Obsessions

Last night Maia dumped Jay’s sorry ass, rightfully, after catching her in bed with Norman… and Li Mei asked the question “what’s wrong with a jar and a turkey baster?”

But of course no one answered her.

Then she went crazy and called Jay “a lesbian ho bag”!

Oh well, it was all quite entertaining anyway.

Now we’ll wait eagerly to see if Jay is pregnant from her virginity-losing, one night stand with no thought as to her fertility cycle. My bet… of course she is!!

Best quote:

Uh-oh, there’s trouble in lezzie-land!

Shortland Street Loses The Plot

// May 31st, 2005 // 203 Comments » // Lesbian, Moviesandtv, Obsessions

Far be it from me to speak evil of Shortland Street, but what are the writers thinking with the latest plot for our fave lesbian couple, Maia and Jay?

Why on earth would any lesbian worthy of the name think it was necessary to sleep with a bloke in order to get pregnant? Jay even mentioned the jar and the syringe, but then next minute it was all, “let’s go to bed”! Why on earth did they never discuss what their partners would think of this idea? Let alone the fact that the poor girl has obviously put no thought into where she is in her cycle or whether she is ovulating or not!

Sorry, Shorty, I just can’t go along with this one.

A friend of mine suggested the other day that Shorty has got very “Grange Hill” at the moment. While watching Jake hang his giant “Jake + Claire 4 Eva” banner from a warehouse and then almost falling to his death, I was forced to concur!

Discovered today that the BBC’s adaptation of Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith is screening in Britain as we speak! If you have not heard of Ms Waters, she also penned the amazing Tipping The Velvet which was made into a fantastic BBC miniseries also. Fingersmith is my favourite of her novels so I am very excited by this development. I will have to get the DVD as soon as it’s available!

The novels are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as well, the twists and turns in Fingersmith will make your head spin!

L Word Drama!

// July 19th, 2004 // 13 Comments » // Lesbian

Recently we received a lovely care package from Australia from my buddy ACP. It contained (among other things) the last five eps of the L Word. Watched two last night and I just have to say, it’s turned into a fantastic show – the drama, the humour, the tragedy! The horrible Christian family organisation woman! That bitch! By the way, she was played by Helen Shaver who was one of the leads in Desert Hearts, the first ever lesbian movie with a happy ending.

It seems that Shane is turning into the Phil Hunter of the L Word (Bill reference, sorry)

It really has got better and better considering the first eps were pretty trashy and predictable.

Anyway, I am imbued with gratitude to acp for sending them over, and to the cast and crew of the show for making such great television!

Of course, it could all turn to crap in the last three eps…

PS Nice to see Snoop Dogg in it as well – he pops up in the strangest places – heh heh…

Danger Island

// August 30th, 2001 // 14 Comments » // Moviesandtv

Reality TV has sunk to a whole new level with the new US show, ‘Danger Island’. This program “will feature 12 criminals being tracked by professional manhunters on a deserted tropical island. The last criminal to be caught wins, and a $1 million prize will be given to the victim of the winner’s last crime. Murderers, rapists and child molesters will not be allowed to take part.”

Interesting but I think it’s a bit unfair leaving out the murderers. You could get some real excitement with an all-murderers special. Apparently one of the manhunters will be Lou Ferrigno of Incredible Hulk fame! Can’t wait for this one.

Drowned Madonna

// August 28th, 2001 // No Comments » // Moviesandtv, Music

Just had lunch with my favourite babble buddy, Anthony C.P, who very kindly picked me up a copy of Romancing the Stone at the EzyDVD sale. I really love that movie – not quite up to Raiders of the Lost Ark of course but I still found Kathleen Turner quite crushilicious as a teenager. Watched the Madonna ‘Drowned World’ concert on Channel 9 last night and enjoyed most of it. Madonna did play the guitar a little bit more than was necessary, but she looked so happy and proud while she was doing it that I just couldn’t resent her for it. I loved the little country music segment and it was great to see some really butch female dancers looking totally hot. I’m sure Maddy has a bit of a thing for a butch in braces!

Here’s a very funny clip called ‘Truth in Advertising‘ (3.3 MB) – particularly amusing if you work for an advertising agency as I do! This clip is hosted on the equally fabulous site /usr/bin/girl of which these babblings are a pale imitation.

So, how about Aaliyah dying? Read a good theory that it was the curse of the Anne Rice movie adaptation. Think about it – River Phoenix dies just before he is to film Interview With The Vampire, and now Aaliyah just after she’d filmed Queen of the Damned. Spooky!
