Obama wins! And mentions the gays and the disabled in his victory speech! I am hoping he will turn out to be a closet socialist just like John McCain said, and start REALLY redistributing some wealth.

Still watching the proposed same-sex marriage ban in California, which is looking like it will pass thanks in part to $20 million donated by the Mormon Church to support it. Maybe still some hope though?

We are off to the hospital shortly as Archie is going to have a sleep study to see if he has sleep apnoea. This means he has to sleep at the hospital with little electrodes attached to many many parts of his body, and they monitor his oxygen levels and all sorts of other things no doubt. In recent years, it’s been discovered that a large proportion of kids with Down Syndrome have sleep apnoea, which can impact their development quite significantly as they are not getting proper rest. Archie had it before which is why he had his tonsils and adenoids removed. If he still has it, he may need to wear a special mask when he goes to bed at night.

Anyway it’s my turn to be the lucky parent who sleeps at the hospital with him – as you can imagine, it’s no easy task getting him to lie still while the millions of electrodes are attached, nor is it fun getting him to sleep in such an interesting environment! Hence the luck wishing, please!

The sky was a funny red colour tonight after raining all day. Australian skies are definitely different from NZ. I felt like I was on Mars!

Phoenix has Landed

I am very excited about the latest mission to Mars, Phoenix, which has touched down in the Martian Arctic. It will be hunting for organic molecules and traces of life in the zone where the frozen polar ice becomes Martian desert. Here is its current view of Mars:

There is something so inherently cool about getting this pictures from another planet on the internet so quickly!

It’s still settling in, getting its robotic arms limbered up and so on, but expect some fascinating stuff from Mars in the near future! More info here.
