Not Pleasant If You Are A Hippy

We foolishly thought that the tummy bug was behind us, but Archie was leaking things all over the floor this morning again, and then of course Harry started vomiting. So much for the planned visit to the dental clinic this morning. Ah the joys of family life! Still the boys are happy as it means they get to watch DVDs (whereas normally they are only allowed one DVD after lunch).

It will almost be a blessed relief to get back to university and cut up rats! Speaking of the rats, got this info from a former student of the course.

The rats are frozen and contain a preservative, and they don’t smell like rats. They smell like formalin – ie, not pleasant, but not disgusting either.

The thing that some people DID find a little challenging was looking at 72 hour eggs – you break an egg and fish out the embryo to have a look at it under a microscope. At this stage, it is little more than a brain and notochord, but it also has a heart which you can see beating.

Not pleasant if you are a hippy…

The other thing that was a bit annoying was the heart lung dissection (sheep) – because these DO smell a bit, and they are obviously a lot larger than a rat. The heart and lungs come from the meatworks, so they are pretty clean, but it is a time to wear your lab coat…

Guess I should buy that lab coat after all… but now I am actually LOOKING FORWARD to the rat autopsy.

Hex

As if poor A didn’t have enough to deal with, last night he had a ghastly tummy bug – heaps of vomiting, he went through 3 duvets, 2 blankets, 2 pillows, a mattress protector and 2 sheets. His last puke was at 1am and then we all slept in. He came and climbed into our bed and we were hit with a rather ripe smell… turned out his sleepsuit was bursting at the seams with diarrhea!! Yummy! So it was a morning bath for him, with one mummy washing and the other holding his bandaged arm out of the water. Then of course we realised that there was diarrhea all over his bandage, so it was back to the doctor for another re-bandaging.

Seems like maybe this family has a hex on it – can anyone lift the curse?

I’m Back

Once again I have proved to myself that if I don’t blog every day, I will fall by the side of the information superhighway in a pile of unmotivated goo. So once again I am resolved to take up the baton of bloggliness and put up a post every day, even if it is a boring link or You Tube video – but SOMETHING. Despite all the madness life is throwing at me at the moment, the blog must take priority!!

So, a quick update:

Me
Busybusybusy. So busy. The kind of busy where you’re almost hoping you have a heart attack or a nervous breakdown becuase then at least you’re be lying down. But that’s a natural consequence of doing two papers, having two toddlers and having tons of work on I suppose. Oh, and also I have a chemistry exam tonight but am succesfully blocking that from my mind, as I haven’t had any time to study for it.

Jan
Busy being a “solo” mother while I work. Bringing up our offspring brilliantly. Doesn’t have anyone to play World of Warcraft with any more.

Archie
He’s had a horrible lurgy the last week with a rash and hoarse throat. But back at kindy today for the first time in ages. Hooray! Is currently obsessed with Madagascar and (still) Hi-5.

Harry
Cute but evil. Charming yet strongwilled. Many many tantrums interspersed with incredibly cute chattering. He has invented some new words including “hopalop” (lollipop) and “oranjinin” (orange).

Go Wild in the Country

We’ve escaped out to the Wairarapa for a few days to make the most of the last days of holidays. Sadly the weather out here today is really crap! But nice to be back to nature, especially nature with wireless broadband. Archie has been really sick with a tummy bug. We are hoping the sight of Snowy the pony will revive him. He will be back at kindy next week and we have decided to move kindys, so it’ll be a whole new experience for him. His support worker moves with him though which is good.

Mum’s going to babysit tonight so we can go out on the town in Greytown. Exciting!
