New Camera – Thanks Panasonic

In December we bought a new Panasonic plasma TV, and of course, as happens these days, we got something free with it. That free thing arrived today after much form filling and waiting – a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT1. These rugged little beauties cost $600 in the shops so I was very happy to get one for “free”. Also I am sick of lugging my giant Canon EOS around with me on family outings!

I particularly like that it is shockproof to 1.5m – perhaps even Janproof? She has dropped 2 of our digital cameras and destroyed them in the past. Also it is waterproof to 3m, so if Archie tries to flush it down the toilet, it may survive, unlike Jan’s iPod. And it shoots HD video as well, not sure what the quality’s like, but hey! HD in your pocket’s gotta be good. And did I mention that it is ORANGE? How cool is that?

Here’s some quick test shots I did:

Whole Again

I was very surprised when my new camera arrived by courier at 8:30am this morning, when I only deposited the money into E-top’s bank at 3pm yesterday. So E-top get a big thumbs up from me for service and speed.

I’ve been merrily snapping away all morning, as you can imagine. One disadvantage of the 8 megapixels is that now my largest CF card only holds 32 images! I can’t afford to get myself a 1GB card at the moment, so I will just take images at medium quality where I can at least take 55 pics at a time. Hopefully I won’t need to print any out at A1 size…

The camera itself is great though. Very responsive instant shutter speed, you can hold down the button and just take one photo after the other, it fits my two existing EOS lenses, and it has great auto spot focusing… I love it! Pics coming to Flickr very soon. The Harry and Archie fix you’ve been craving for a month!!

New Toy

I’ve just ordered my brand new Canon 350D digital SLR and I am filled with antici-pation. I can’t wait to get back on Flickr with some actual photos – much as I know Rosie has been enjoying the scans.

In other news check out this great post about piracy on Asymptomatic.

To people like the RIAA and MPA I, along with many other people, say this to you: your failed business model is not my problem. Work with us, not against us, and we will be your friends. Work against us, and you can only lose. Because we are the ones that built you, power you, run you, we are you. You just don’t know it yet.

On Technology

My Palm Pilot is broken: It won’t charge up anymore and is flat out of batteries. Is is the Palm? Is it the cradle? Will I ever go paperless geocaching again?

I want a Canon 350D: After playing with David’s 300D last weekend, I can’t stop thinking about that luscious silky black body, and that smoothly rotating zoomy lens, and that heart stoppingly gorgeous multi-point focus display… Love is strange…

And today I learned that seeing people from the blog world in the flesh is a very enjoyable activity. They can tell you who the Auckland drugs bust sports celebrities are WITH THEIR VOICE and no judge can throw them in prison for contempt. Also they make great scones – thanks for having us, it was very fun.
