This Paragraph On AfterEllen Made My Day
Xena and Gabrielle are the standard bearers of lesbian badassery. Every other lesbian and bisexual badass in the world should aspire to their greatness. They should place Xena and Gabrielle’s badass photos beside their beds and worship Xena and Gabrielle’s badass DVDs on an alter each morning while eating Xena and Gabrielle’s badass cereal for breakfast each morning out of Xena and Garbrielle’s badass collectible bowls. Xena and Gabrielle will never be out-badassed. Ever.
Thank you, Heather Hogan!

Girls, Girls, Girls, Girls
The four albums I’ve been listening to the most in the last week, all by talented women with one word names:
Both excellent dance pop albums. Both with very dramatic poses, and very metallic breastplates. But remember, hands on the hips is darker and more serious than hands in the air.
Both quirky pop songstresses. Both blonde. Both naked. Both decorated with strange colourful objects. But only one is a gay lady.
All the above are most excellent by the way, and highly recommended by ME!

Genius YouTube Idea
I just uploaded my first ever cheesy fan music video to YouTube (embedded below, but I warn you, very cheesy and probably of interest to NO ONE I KNOW) and was struck by an idea as I carefully entered all my disclaimers about “I don’t own this content blah blah blah”.
Why doesn’t YouTube allow uploaders to enter in the video copyright holder and enter in the audio copyright holder? Then those copyright holders could be notified and approve or disapprove the use of their material. If they approve, they get a portion of the Google ads proceeds from the video or can place in their own ad eg “buy this video here” or “watch more of this here”.
YouTube sort of does this by automagically detecting songs and putting in the iTunes link (I was quite impressed that it correctly identified my soundtrack) but why not give the uploaders the opportunity to do the right thing and the copyright owners the chance to make some money and promote their products in new ways?
Just a thought… and now the cheesy video!

The Specials Are Pretty Special
If you haven’t seen the web series “The Specials” yet, you should check it out! It’s a reality show about five housemates with developmental disabilities living together in a share house in Brighton (four of the five have Down Syndrome).
It’s hilarious! I like Sam the best, he is really out there. Here’s one of my fave episodes where he falls for the Lady Boys of Bangkok:
The Specials – Episode 3 from KADA Films on Vimeo.
I think it’s great to have something like this that shows people with disabilities just going about their regular lives – socially, romantically but NOT medically. The creators are trying to get money together for Season 2, so support them any way you can!

Goodbye Kate McG
Very sad today to hear of the death of Kate McGarrigle. I have been a fan of the McGarrigles since the late 80′s when I discovered them while working at Radio Active. Truly great musicians and of course Kate’s wonderful genes also gave us Rufus and Martha Wainwright.
Here’s a clip of Kate, Rufus & Martha all performing together 6 weeks ago in London. I cried most of the way through it for some reason!
RIP Kate.

New Phoenix Foundation EP For Christmas!
The Phoenix Foundation, one of NZ’s most popular bands and featuring my very own little bro Samuel, have just released a new ep “Merry Kriskmass” available for download and as usual it is effing awesome!
Here’s what the band had to say:
‘’I feel no pain, feel no fear, for the Krisk is a white reindeer” …. yes, a small stuffed white man and a reindeer have somehow managed to inspire our brand new little EP called Merry Kriskmass.
This fun, slightly odd 6-track EP managed to enter our lives during the time we were supposed to be recording our new album, providing much needed distraction from the often-gruelling album recording process. So much so, that we decided to share it with you in the hope that perhaps it brings some extra Christmas cheer.
We hope you enjoy. New album coming next year, and MEEEEERRY KRISKMASS.

Two Blogs Are Better Than One?
I’m proud to announce the birth of a new blog I’ve started called Lesbian Of The Day. The basic aim is to feature one famous lesbian a day in order to increase positive visibility of successful, interesting and happy lesbians out there. I know when I was a young dykeling, positive images of lesbians were few and far between and I would have loved a site like this (well, any site really since the internets weren’t around then). Don’t expect any fantastic writing or analysis, I’m just gonna put up a big picture and say a few words.
Here’s the lucky lesbians of the days so far:

Jack Of All Trades
BASTARDY THEATRICAL TRAILER bastardydocumentary.com from BASTARDY DOCUMENTARY on Vimeo.
Great article about a very interesting documentary currently screening at Palace cinemas nationwide. Jack Charles is a critically acclaimed Aboriginal actor and also a junkie and burglar, and this young Melbourne chap spent seven years filming him.
Liking this Aussie online magazine, The Blackmail, too! http://www.theblackmail.com.au
