Pinterest Bookmarklet for iPad

// March 18th, 2011 // Geekery, Internets

Frustratingly, there is no easy way to add a Javascript bookmarklet to your iPad, as I discovered today when using a new social site, Pinterest (great site by the way, I recommend it if you can score an invite). Like so many sharing sites, Pinterest utilises a bookmarklet to share things you like with others. Not everyone uses Safari or wants to sync their bookmarks with their iPad, the current Apple recommended method. There is a manual way to do it though!

Chris Bray has created a very useful page with manual bookmarklets for all the major sites, including Tumblr, Facebook, Google Reader and more. I’ve created this one for myself, for a Pinterest bookmarklet.

Instructions:
From Chris Bray:

1. Add this page as a bookmark
2. Select and copy the Javascript below to your clipboard.
3. Go to your bookmarks and edit the new bookmark. Edit the name and paste the Javascript in the field for the URL.
4. Done.

For more detailed instructions, check out Marco Arment’s step by step guide for adding the Instapaper bookmarklet to Safari for an iPhone, iPad, or an iPod Touch. You can use the same method here.

I can’t imagine this can break your iPad, but use at your own risk.

  3. Mary says:

On my iPad, I get a message that says:
    http://jemsweb.com
Sorry, we can’t see any big images on this page.

  4. Trace says:

    Worked a treat, cheers!

I’m having the same trouble as Mary above (“no big images”)what am I doing wrong? Thanks for this!

  7. Cara says:

    Thanks for the tip!!

  8. Kelly says:

I can get this trick to create the pin from my iPad but the picture is missing on the board and the pin (instead there is a small box with a blue question mark). Will it show up later? Anyone else have this issue?

  9. Delphine says:

    Merci!

  10. emily says:

@Colleen & Mary: This is a message from Pinterest themselves which you got on this page because there are no images big enough for Pinterest on here. I’ve added one so people can test with it in the future.

@Kelly: I haven’t had this issue myself. I suspect it is a problem with the image you are pinning rather than the bookmarklet. Have a look in the Pinterest support pages.

Glad others have found this useful!

  11. Kathryn says:

    Brilliant! Thanks

  12. Kathryn says:

Thank you thank you! Awesome fix for the problem!

  13. Meg says:

I copied the new JavaScript into the bookmark’s URL, but I don’t see that anything has changed in my bookmarking abilities. Does the bookmarklet appear when I want to save an image or add a bookmark or what?

  14. Emily says:

When you’re on a page that has an image you wish to pin, select the added bookmarklet. A new window should pop up, allowing you to select which image to pin – exactly like the official Pinterest bookmarklet but on your iPad. Hope this helps.

  15. Jenn says:

It definitely works but for some reason my browser freezes up after I pin. Any suggestions?

  16. Thank you so much for this!!!

  17. Heidi says:

Thank you! Fast, easy, and it works!

  18. emily says:

@Jenn The pinning does open up in a new window which you then need to manually close. Not sure if this is the issue?

  19. Hannah says:

I am having the same problem as Jenn. The pinning doesn’t open in a whole new window, but continues in de screen I’m in, so after pinning I need to go back a few ‘pages’ to the page where i found the picture. After that I can’t enter the other windows or the bookmarks anymore. The only solution I found is to shut down safari by double clicking the button on the bottom of the screen and removing Safari from the list. Than, if I reopen Safari, it’s working properly again until I pin a new picture. Mjeu, I love the idea, but this way it’s a bit to complicated… Any idea’s?

  20. kris says:

OMG! Thanks so much! So far it’s bringing up the new window…too cool!

  21. Kiso says:

Installed it and it seemed to work but then my safari became unresponsive and I can’t use it at all. Please help.

  22. emily says:

@Kiso, I would suggest restarting your Safari and then deleting the bookmark if it doesn’t work for you. Sorry, I can’t really help troubleshoot as I’m not an iPad guru and the javascript comes from Pinterest itself. Easier just to delete it!

  23. Janet says:

Hells Bellsl, it works! Thank you

May seem like a stupid question…how do I copy the JavaScript to my clipboard? I’m not quite sure how to do that!

  47. HGB says:

    Brilliant! TY

  48. Louise says:

I too can’t see,m to copy the JavaScript text, Any ideas?

  49. Dave says:

I cant copy the text either, it just copied the box that the text is in

  50. JaR says:

somehow it keeps copying the box and not just the script for me so here’s the script for anyone else having issues with it.

    javascript:void((function(){var%20e=document.createElement(‘script’);e.setAttribute(‘type’,'text/javascript’);e.setAttribute(‘charset’,'UTF-8′);e.setAttribute(‘src’,'http://assets.pinterest.com/js/pinmarklet.js?r=’+Math.random()*99999999);document.body.appendChild(e)})());
