Biological Bad Ass

// March 10th, 2006 // Geekery

In my new part-time uni, full-time work schedule, Thursday is the day I spend 9-5 up at university. Did this for the first time yesterday and it was great! I so wish I could afford to be a full time student. Ah well, I can dream.

Anyway! Cell biology has been kind of average so far with much discussion of microscopes, staining, best scientific practice etc. But yesterday we got stuck into some actual cell stuff, and it was so confusing and overwhelming! Here are some of the terms I heard yesterday that I had NO IDEA what they meant:

  • plasmid
  • fimbriae
  • basement membrane
  • belt desmosomes
  • cytosol
  • vacuolar system
  • golgi complex
  • endoplasmic reticulum

    I think it’s time to ramp up the reading and get out that Dictionary of Biology…

    Then we had a biology lab where we looked at the following cells under the microscope:

  • human brain tumour cells
  • another sort of human brain tumour cells
  • human cervical cells with papiloma virus
  • human blood cells with leukaemia
  • mouse intestinal cells

    Ew.
