The Return
Back in Wellington at my little desk. It was an emotional time in Auckland. Despite the sad circumstances, it was great for all the brothers, sisters and cousins to be together. We went to see Grandma in the funeral home and she looked really good. I’ve only seen one dead body before, and he looked really DEAD somehow, but Grandma looked like she could wake up at any minute. She had an amazing forehead! So few wrinkles for a lady of 88 - only a couple more than me!
The funeral itself was lovely. Quite simple. Somehow (by accident) it was an all-female affair - a female pastor, the eulogy was given by her daughters (my mother and Aunt Deborah), readings by my two cousins Sunshine and Zigi, and a song by my sister Rosie (”Don’t Fence Me In”). Even the two attendants from the funeral home were two dapper women in suits. The only exception were the six male pallbearers - my three brothers, Uncle Shaun, and the two ex-sons-in-law, my father and Uncle Roy. Anyway it was a lovely day and I think Grandma would have appreciated it.
The drive back was lengthy and both the boys are a bit sick so were not such good travellers as on the way up. We stopped at McDonalds which cheered them up a bit - chips. playground and toys - bloody cunning multinational! Jan got a speeding ticket around Lake Karapiro and the copper gave her a right bollocking - poor thing! Archie & Harry were so happy to get back to their house, they must have missed home.
