RIP Grandma / Elizabeth
Well, it all happens at once - just got a call this morning that my grandmother in Auckland passed away last night. It was a shock to all of us as she was not ill, but she was 88! By coincidence my mother is staying here at the moment, so I think we will all drive up to Auckland for the funeral together. They think it was very peaceful, seemed to just die in her sleep, the best way to go really.
I am pretty upset as I was always particularly close to Grandma. She was an amazing woman, one of the youngest in NZ to get her pilot’s licence, spoke several languages, travelled a lot to Europe and brought up 3 girls as a solo mum, not easy in the 1950’s. I used to love going to stay with her in her little one bedroom flat. I remember one holiday we tried to climb all the volcanoes in Auckland, a difficult feat, but we did manage a few including Rangitoto. We shared a love of raspberry buns.
I’m just really glad I got to spend a lot of time with her in Auckland last year, and also in January when she came and stayed in the Wairarapa. She loved Archie & Harry, and they seemed very fond of her too! She actually went to Newtown School, where they will be going in a couple of years, and grew up around Newtown.
Very sad! But she had a good knock.
All this has overshadowed the great time we had last night at the Phoenix Foundation private gig - got a babysitter and went out to hear some rock! The lads were amazing as always. Can’t wait for the new album to come out. I took a few snaps as well which I will post sometime.
