Gloom
Still in shock about the Howard victory in Australia. I guess not being in the country, I was ill-prepared for how the Latham campaign seems to have floundered. And now there’ll be three more years of Little Johnny - and the prospect of a Howard-Bush victory is looming. Excuse me while I roll on the floor screaming!
Politically we are now very inclined to stay on in NZ - Helen Clark’s Labour is not perfect but at least they are operating from some moral ground, eg the Civil Union Bill.
The NZ local government elections were also on Saturday and the horrible conservative motorway-loving John Banks was ousted by cereal maker Dick Hubbard - berry berry nice! Also a predominantly left-wing council for the first time since 1938. Perhaps public transport in Auckland can finally get a fair go.
Still very sad for my adopted country though.

Everyone I know in RL and online (especially fellow Aussies on livejournal) and shocked and distressed. Howard won because people are stupid and greedy and actually believed his lie that he can keep interest rates down.
And Fascists First have the balance of power. Those right-wing reactionary bigoted born-agains want to burn lesbians at the stake.
I know two people seriously planning to leave the country. Not me, I’m going to fight as much as I can.
Still, best keep a room set aside for me, I might need a safe house ; )

personally politics doesn’t effect my day-to-day life or happiness. they are all as bad as each other anyway! i won’t give them such control over my life or where i would want to live.

Fear not, Bush will lose, not that it will make much difference. As for Austruckingfailure, nothing changes, the racist reactionaries rule.
