Stalled In Putaruru

Well, we tried hard to get to Auckland but it is much slower travelling with two kids than we had anticipated - plus you always feel so guilty about having them in the car for so long - so we decided to stop in Putaruru, about 3 hours from Auckland. Then we can have a leisurely drive in the morning. Putaruru’s slogan is “An outdoor town for outdoor people” - and while in the supermarket I saw a teenaged boy wearing a t-shirt that read “Get rooted in horny Hamilton” and on the back had a phone number for a massage parlour! So it’s a little scary. But they have a damn good spa at the motel we’re at - vigourously bubbly.

We had a great drive up from Wangas, the mountains and the Desert Road were so glorious as it was a beautifully sunny day, and Mt Ruapehu was just shining. Also I had forgotten how amazing Lake Taupo is. Moon Unit performing well on the open road - Jan reckons he’s a great car for passing other cars in, a skill that in me at least has completely atrophied! I just wait for a passing lane.

Archie has wreaked absolute havoc in his motel room tonight - first ripping the fake wood veneer off the top of the side table, and then taking a huge bite out of a cake of soap! He seems to be fast asleep now though.

In other news, I spoke to Dins’ mum tonight and discovered that she has sent all Dins and Ned’s stuff to Sydney, including the Playstation 2 that I was going to use when in Auckland! Despair! I guess I will have to buy an X Box to tide me over….;-)

I am impressed by Archie’s mission to rid New Zealand of fake wood veneer. It will be a challenge but he is superboy after all. Go Archie!
