An albatross leading a global migration race is feared to have fallen victim to long-line fishing in the Indian Ocean.

The race from Tasmania to South Africa was set up to highlight the dangers posed to the birds by the fishing practice.

Eager to find out more about the migration habits of the albatross, birds from three islands around Tasmania were electronically tagged.

A betting race was set up to help highlight the danger posed to the albatross population by long-line fishing.

Aphrodite, which was being sponsored by former supermodel Jerry Hall, had been leading the whole race until she disappeared off the radar.
