Emily’s Movie Reviews

Amazingly I have watched 5 films in the last five days. It’s almost like when I was childless! Here is a quick rundown:

Buffalo Soldiers A dark portrayal of the US military - scary because it all seems so plausible. Joaquin Phoenix was great, but I thought Anna Paquin sleepwalked through her part. Started off very well but then got a bit bogged down. A bit dull really, probably got most attention because of the timing of its release. Definitely not as good as Three Kings no matter what it says on the back of the case!
** Two stars

Phone Booth Definitely not what I expected. It was all on the one location and all in real time - yet somehow managed to keep the suspense coming. I had an issue with some of the sound mixing - the guy on the other end of the phone sounded too much like a voiceover - but generally thought it was great. Jan really loved it!
*** Three stars!

Lost In Translation The only one I went to see at the movies. I had heard a lot of good stuff about it, and it did not disappoint. However I do think a lot of its charm came from the portrayal of Japan and the Japanese people, not so much from the plot or acting!
*** Four stars!

Kissing Jessica Stein I really enjoyed this romantic comedy with a twist - nudge nudge - it treated the whole story of straight woman hooks up with girl with great respect and managed to avoid stereotypes and offending the lesbian community. Well, this lesbian at least! I have a feeling this one is going on my DVD wishlist.
**** Four stars!

The Rules Of Attraction Being a big fan of the book, I was looking forward to seeing this adaptation. It was a very, um, interesting film. Very dark - some truly horrible scenes that were hard to watch. And all the characters were very unsympathetic and selfish. Can’t say as I enjoyed it but worthwhile seeing.
** Two stars!
